What a difference the right tactics make in 11!

I started off using the tactics that worked for me in FIFA 10, 4-2-3-1 pretty standard with the defense sitting deep and two DMF to protect against the break and help distribute the ball.
In FIFA 11 I was getting hammered online, embarrassing stuff. I tried a few variations ... pushing the wingers higher to make a 4-3-3 but still no luck.
Then I tried an old formation I hadn't used for ages just to see what would happen.
It's hard to describe but start out with a back four sitting deep. Next add a DMF on the left of midfield a CM on the right and a RW pushed pretty far up. These should make a diagonal line across the pitch.
Next a LM level with the CM, pushed wide. Then add a CF level with the RW and finally a ST pushed right to make another diagonal line of three - identical to the first but higher up the pitch.
Suddenly there are triangles everywhere, more passing options so I don't give the ball away and the midfield is staggered so balls over the top have to get past a CM, DMF and the back four.
If you're getting stomped in online play, give it a go :) I'm doing much better. Even when I lose it's usually pretty close, not the thrashings I was getting.
I won't post the positional and mentality settings though, got to keep something secret.

Thanks for the tip. Can you PM me a screenshot of that formation??|||with what team??
you cant just play the same Tactics with EVERY team..
that would make the game boring and dull..
thats what makes TEAMS a TEAM.. is the different way they play, you should change tactics accordingly to what team you're playing against..
with Man Utd i play at home, default 442..
away 433..|||

Lol what difference does that make??|||Agreed for me any team that plays 4-1-2-1-2 well works well for me, finding a formation that works for you will effect your game in every sort of way.|||

Lol what difference does that make??

I suppose it could make a difference if you have one or two stand out players who do best in certain positions. Someone like Messi or Ronaldo need to be played high up the pitch and wide, so they can cut in.
I usually play as Man U so I don't have that problem :)
Back four of O'Pies, Rio, Vidic and Evra.
Carrick or Fletcher as LDM
Scholes or Fletcher as CM
Valencia or Nani high up at RW
Nani or Giggs at LM
Wazza at CF and Existentialist Smoking Bulgarian or Hernandez up front.|||

Wut?|||Interesting set-up mate. I found it tough to find a formation that works for me.
Online i use Celtic and only Celtic and normally the formation i come up against is 41212 with my default being a 4312 which was ok but it offered no width and i got done on the wings lol.
I tried changing it about and i still got caught out due to lack of pace more than anything as you can imagine using a 3.5 star team vrs 5.
I've moved on to a 3-5-2 which offers me great balance and leaves me safe as houses middle to back :) only time i get done now is through my own stupidity or when i can't resist the urge to bring out a second defender (which i must say i'm getting better at not doing that)
I agree with some of the other guys.. every team needs it's own formation. It's all very well going a 5star team and using what everyone else tends to use but do that with a weaker team and you'll find yourself in bother.
Very happy with my 352 and my tweaked tactics that allows me to control my two cdms and 3 center backs.|||http://www.easports.com/player-hub/stats/PS3/rougement210
he's not got the best record average goals per game is 1 so i don't see how that formation he posted can be much good.
Best imo is 4-4-1-1 with cb set back to cover lobs and RDM LDM RM LM CAM ST
and when behind go 4-3-3
